Michael Kawalek joined Kelly Durham & Pittard, LLP in 2016 and focuses his practice on civil appeals and strategic trial support at both the state and federal level.
Prior to joining the firm, Michael worked as a trial attorney specializing in complex commercial litigation and intellectual property disputes. He began his career at the litigation boutique Bickel & Brewer (now Brewer, Attorneys & Counselors), and later joined the litigation section of Bell Nunnally & Martin LLP. Michael’s trial practice encompassed a diverse group of clients, ranging from individuals to Fortune 100 companies, across a variety of industries.
Michael graduated from the University of Texas School of Law in 2010, during which time he served as an editor for the Review of Litigation and a member of the Board of Advocates. He also clerked for the Appellate Division of the Travis County Attorney’s Office during his third year. Michael received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University, where he wrote for Tiger Magazine, the second-oldest collegiate satire magazine in the United States.
Michael was named one of the “Best Lawyers Under 40 in Dallas” in 2018 by D Magazine.
Michael is licensed to practice in all Texas courts, both state and federal, as well as before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States of America. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Dallas Bar Association and the Dallas Safari Club.
Successfully defeated mandamus challenge seeking to prevent deposition of corporate president under the apex doctrine in catastrophic workplace injury case.
Successfully defended medical providers’ appeal, challenging the plaintiff’s Chapter 74 expert reports in a case in which the medical providers’ negligence resulted in the amputation of the plaintiff’s leg.
